Mice finally became the stars in 1977's "The Rescuers." Brave Miss Bianca (voiced by Eva Gabor), a Hungarian representative to the United Nations of mousedom, teams with reticent Bernard ( Bob Newhart) to rescue a kidnapped girl. "They did a really charming job in that movie - the mice build very neat, functional, usable items out of our junk," says Petersen. And 13 years later, the pair starred in Disney's first animated sequel. Bonus points for Madame Medusa - one of Disney's best (if underrated) villains, voiced to perfection by Oscar-winner Geraldine Page - who makes Bernard and Bianca earn every heroic moment.
