Authorities: Wrong-way I-80 driver causes fatal crash

A 66-year-old Bridgeview motorist was killed during a wrong-way crash on I-80 in far southwest Grundy County near Seneca early this morning, authorities said.

Abed M. Bader was pronounced dead on the scene about 12:45 a.m., said Grundy County Coroner John Callahan. An autopsy will be performed this afternoon on Bader, who lived in Bridgeview, Callahan said.

At 12:05 a.m. a man driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 at Nettle Creek Road when he slammed into an eastbound 2008 Toyota Yaris being driven by Bader, said ISP Master Sgt. Martez Malone.

A semitrailer tractor truck that was also eastbound then hit the Yaris, said Malone.

The wrong-way driver was taken to Morris Hospital with serious injuries, said Malone. The trucker was not hurt.

Malone declined to say if officials thought speeding, drugs, alcohol or texting could have caused the crash.

“It’s still under investigation,’’ Malone said.

The driver has not been charged with anything as of early this afternoon.
