Police are investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl who suffered blunt trauma to the head in her home in the
neighborhood on the South Side.
Paramedics were called to the 10900 block of South Eberhart Avenue around 8:50 p.m. Saturday and found Iyonna Davis unresponsive, police said.
She was taken to Roseland Hospital and pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m. Saturday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Sunday found she died from blunt head trauma suffered from child abuse, and her death was classified as a homicide.
The girl’s stepmother told police she called 911 after the girl started having
, authorities said. The woman told officers she had fed the toddler chicken quesadillas, then left her playing on the floor while she put away dishes.
When the woman checked on the girl, she was on her back. There was a small amount of vomit on her mouth and she was having trouble breathing, the woman told police. The stepmother said she called 911 and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl, police said.
The girl’s father told police the toddler had a mild
a few weeks ago, but had no medical conditions and did not take any medication, according to police.
Area South detectives were investigating.
