After weeks of negotiations with restricted free agent Chris Campoli, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said Friday that the defenseman would not be back with the team next season.
"We tried to work it out with Chris--we worked our hardest," Bowman said. "We want back and forth and made him our best offer and it didn’t work for them. We indicated that we’re going to have to go another direction and they understand that."
Bowman didn't waste any time as the Hawks signed free agent Sami Lepisto to a one-year, $750,000 contract to replace Campoli on the blue line.
"We ended up going to the free-agent market," Bowman said. "We talked to a few people but Sami was the guy. Speaking to him he really wanted to be with the Blackhawks. That means a lot to us. He’s a guy who has some growth to his game as well"
