Chicagoland book club: the Bookbags

One thing about our club: We all work for or are retired from local school districts in LaSalle County and in keeping with that theme we call ourselves the Bookbags. Our 8-year-old club meets once a week at local restaurants and usually has 10 or 12 members present.

Authors we'd most like to meet: Janet Evanovich, Amy Dickinson, Elizabeth Strout, Jon Krakauer, Jeannette Walls.

Worst excuse for not reading a book: The dog of one of our members “ate her homework” by taking a liking to the glue on the spine of the book she had left on the cocktail table.

Average time spent actually talking about a book: We spend 25 to 40 minutes in discussion and then 15 minutes talking about other books members have read and selecting the following month's book.

The next book we're reading: “Shanghai Girls: A Novel” by Lisa See.

Some books we loved: “The Time Traveler's Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger; “Loving Frank: A Novel” by Nancy Horan; “Water for Elephants: A Novel” by Sara Gruen; “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: A Novel” by Lisa See; “The Glass Castle: A Memoir” by Jeannette Walls.
