From (way in the back of) last night's Granta kick-off event:
After garnering a dirty look at the click of the good camera in the otherwise silent audience, I resorted to an iPhone set to silent. Clearly the event, held in the Chicago Cultural Center's Preston Bradley Hall, was standing room only.
The event, which was held to begin the week-long celebration of Granta's all-Chicago issue, featured discussion between Audrey Niffenegger, Aleksandar Hemon and Maria Venegas, and was moderated by Chicago Public Radio's Steve Edwards. While the conversation was a solid one, with standout phrases including "a new Chicago moment" when mentioning the state of literature, it was by no means a new conversation, but rather a re-imagining of that which we've had on our minds for a while.
