Man killed, boy seriously wounded in separate South Side shootings

A man in his 50s was killed and a 15-year-old boy was shot in separate South Side attacks this afternoon, officials said.

The man was shot in the head in the 6600 block of South Blackstone Avenue about 5:55 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala. The victim, who may have been shot in a drive-by, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, where he later died, police said.

The boy was in the 8300 block of South Kingston Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood when he was shot about 2 p.m., police said. Fire officials and a witness said the boy was taken for the 8500 block of South Kingston following the shooting.

The boy was believed to have been wounded in the abdomen, and his condition was stabilized at Comer Children's Hospital, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Joshua Purkiss. The boy initially was in serious-to-critical condition when he was taken to the hospital, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Chief Joe Roccasalva.

Since Friday night, at least seven people have been killed and 26 others shot in Chicago.
