To be released by Kino Lorber (date pending). The Cannes jury, headed by Steven Spielberg, awarded Jia Zhangke's film in the best screenplay category for the Chinese filmmaker's four-story mosaic. The dehumanizing effects of China's modern-day economy become the stuff of blood-spattered headlines in Jia's film, blending wuxia martial arts violence and head-on political outrage. It's remarkable that China has permitted "A Touch of Sin" distribution in Jia's homeland. I'm eager for a second look.
