The fire erupted inside and was contained to a third-floor apartment in the large courtyard building in the 7700 block of South Kingston Avenue about 10:30 a.m., said Chicago Fire Department Chief Kevin MacGregor.
"We actually knocked it down pretty quickly," MacGregor said of the firefighters. "It was under control in a short time."
One child was seriously hurt while the other two were in good condition when they were taken to the
Police said the children are 2, 5 and 7-years-old. "They all suffered some degree of injury," MacGregor said of the children.
Two adults were taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and
None of the six injuries was life-threatening, police said.
MacGregor said he could not confirm reports of trapped residents leaping from the building, but police indicated one person jumped out a window and then caught a child thrown from inside the building.
There was no word on the cause of the blaze yet.
