Seeking to discourage car dealers from displaying vehicles on sidewalks and parkways, a City Council committee today doubled the maximum fine to $1,000 for damaging curbs, sidewalks and landscaping.
The measure, proposed by Ald. Lona Lane, 18th, also makes it clear that the city can sue the dealers to try to recover the costs of any needed repairs. Endorsed by the Transportation Committee, the measure is slated for a vote Thursday before the full council.
Lane said she also was concerned about the difficulty disabled folks, including some who use wheelchairs, have getting around the vehicles. Many are parked along Western Avenue in her South Side ward, she added.
Car sellers that park vehicles on public ways without a permit also are subject to illegal parking fines, city officials noted. “Sidewalks belong to pedestrians, not cars,” said Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, who strongly supported the measure.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
