Conan O’Brien has been easy to spot around Chicago -- and not just because he’s 6’4 and has hard-to-miss red hair. The Los Angeles-based talk show host has been out and about in the city while here filming “Conan” at the Chicago Theatre, part of the TBS Just For Laughs comedy festival.
O’Brien had dinner with about 20 of his staff members June 7 at GT Fish & Oyster in River North. He ordered the clam chowder and kept an eye on his Boston Celtics as they faced the Miami Heat in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
On June 8, O’Brien visited Haberdash Men’s Shop. He dined at Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria in the Gold Coast Sunday and Spiaggia Tuesday. O'Brien's week of filming in Chicago came to an end Thursday with a wrap party at N9NE Steakhouse.
“Conan” sidekick and former Yorkville, Ill. resident Andy Richter, who attended the wrap party with his family, had lunch Wednesday at South Branch in the Loop. Richter threw out the first pitch at Thursday’s Cubs game at Wrigley Field.
“30 Rock” actor Jack McBrayer, who appeared on “Conan” Monday, dined at the reopened Cru Cafe & Wine Bar in the Gold Coast that same day. McBrayer was spotted at Riverview Tavern in Roscoe Village Saturday. “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actor Jeff Garlin also appeared on “Conan” Monday and later that evening stopped by my go-to Wrigleyville bar, Merkles, and did an impromptu set at their open mic comedy night.
It’s in the game: You know an event is star-studded when I look at the press release three times to make sure it is taking place in Chicago and not Los Angeles or New York. That’s what I did when I read the line-up for EA Sports’ Madden NFL 13 Pigskin Pro-Am, which is a flag football game that will take place in Grant Park June 22. My childhood idol, Dan Marino, is scheduled to attend, as is Brett Favre, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, Michael Strahan and pop star Ne-Yo and actor Terry Crews.
Meet the press: Channing Tatum will meet with Chicago media Monday to promote his new stripper film, “Magic Mike,” which hits theaters June 29. I asked if I could interview Tatum over lunch at a strip club but was told there wasn’t enough time. Oh well. If you want to read an outstanding Tribune interview with Tatum, check out Chris Borrelli’s conversation with the “21 Jump Street” actor in March.
Man vs. Sandwich: Adam Richman, best known as the star of Travel Channel’s “Man vs. Food,” will meet with Chicago media June 28 to promote his new Travel Channel show, “Adam Richman’s Best Sandwich in America.” He also will ride around the city in a food truck that day passing out Jim Beam-inspired sandwiches and sides. Speaking of Richman, The Fifty/50’s The Four-Courses will be featured on “Best Sandwich” Wednesday. There will be a viewing party at The Fifty/50 that day.
On the record: “Hey everybody, welcome to my party. Have fun – and no fights.” – “Mob Wives Chicago” star Renee Fecarotta jokingly addresses the guests at her viewing party Sunday, which she hosted at her business, Eye Candy Optics, in Ukrainian Village. For more on the viewing party, here is RedEye’s recap.
