A Cook County jury today awarded $40 million to the family of Rhoni Reuter as the result of a civil case against Marni Yang, the woman found guilty of Reuter’s murder.
Yang was convicted in March of killing Reuter, the pregnant girlfriend of former Chicago Bear Shaun Gayle. Yang is serving two life sentences in prison for the 2007 murder.
“Essentially, the criminal trial was all about Marni Yang,” said attorney Theodore Woerthwein, who worked with the Reuter family’s attorney. “This case was all about Rhoni Reuter; who she was, what she was and what her loss meant.”
Woerthwein said neither Yang nor an attorney representing her appeared at the civil trial.
While acknowledging the prospects of Yang paying $40 million are highly unlikely, he said, “You never know, she might write a book in prison.”Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
