The incident happened at about 11 a.m. at the yard near Eastern and Erie, said Bellwood Dep. Chief Miguel Herrera.
As the Union Pacific train was pulling out of the yard, five train cars toppled over, Herrera said.
The five freight cars were refrigerated cars carrying produce and when three of them tipped over, a small amount of diesel fuel leaked, according to Bellwood public safety director Andre Harvey.
The leaks were contained and there were no reported injuries.
Officials did call a Hazardous materials response for the fuel, officials said.
About 20 emergency personnel from several agencies including Bellwood police and fire were on the scene along with officials from Union Pacific.
Harvey said it will take between 12 to 14 hours before the wreckage is cleared and the five cars are put back on the tracks.
Traffic is not being impacted, Herrera said.
But the derailment caused the cancellation of Train No.508 which was scheduled to depart Elburn at 12:25 p.m. and arrive Chicago at 1:50 p.m., on the Union Pacific tracks.
The next inbound train to depart Elburn is scheduled to be Train No.510 which is scheduled to depart Elburn at 2:25 p.m. and arrive Chicago at 3:50 p.m., according to the
