A 24-year-old Orland Park man charged with carjacking an 88-year-old woman was ordered held on $500,000 bond during a court appearance Monday in Cook County court, officials said.
Peter Sousan, of the 8300 block of Sunset Ridge Court, is charged with felony aggravated vehicular hijacking, felony aggravated battery and felony robbery, according to a spokeswoman with the Cook County Circuit Clerk’s office.
He was arrested by police Saturday, five days after the elderly woman was assaulted and her car was taken in a Walgreen’s parking lot in southwest suburban Orland Park.
Police said a man approached the woman about 2 p.m. July 30 and took her purse and keys as she walked toward the store. The woman followed him back to her car. She was kicked in the leg and hit in the chest with the car door. She was treated and released from Palos Community Hospital after the incident, said Orland Park Police Cmdr. John Keating.
“She’s got multiple fractures on her leg, some bruising and soreness in her arms, but she’s doing well,” he said.
Based on descriptions of the attacker given by the victim and two witnesses, Orland Park Police developed Sousan as a suspect, Keating said. He was previously arrested by Orland Park police in December 2011 for misdemeanor criminal trespass to a vehicle, for which he received 12 months supervision, Keating said.
The 88-year-old woman’s stolen Buick was located by Chicago police at 1 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of North Lawndale. Sousan was arrested in the same block Saturday afternoon after residents reported seeing him in the area, police said.
His next court appearance is Aug. 27.
