Police are asking for the public's help in finding the people who vandalized a church in Chicago's East Side neighborhood.
A deacon opening the International Harbor of Grace Church for a morning service on Saturday found pews uprooted, an antique organ destroyed and the walls full of gang slogans, according to Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli. The last time the church had been open was May 13.
The vandals entered the church in the 9700 block of South Avenue L through a pair of rear windows, Mirabelli said.
The vandals removed pews from their bases and cracked a porcelain baptismal pool. The organ was smashed and the keys pulled out, Mirabelli said.
Glass bottles littered the chapel, as well as drug paraphernalia, and gang slogans were written on the walls, he said.
A smaller organ and three computers used for teaching were taken, and a door to the church's community center was pried open, police said.
