As of 9:07 p.m. the Red Line trains were routed to the elevated tracks from Fullerton on the north to Cermak/Chinatown on the south, according to the CTA website.
The website said the service disruption was caused by a medical emergency but no further details were released by the agency.
At about 9:40 p.m. the man could be seen being brought up off the tracks by paramedics and firefighters, still alive but visibly injured with cuts and bruises.
The man jumped in front of the oncoming train, according to police and witnesses at the scene.
A train operator was also taken to a hospital in good-to-fair condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
