's Doug Bruno has been chosen as an assistant coach of the 2012 U.S. women's Olympic basketball team, the Tribune has learned.
The official announcement will be made Friday.
Bruno will be one of three assistants to Connecticut's
. The others are Marynell Meadors, who took the Atlana Dream to the
finals the past two seasons, and Jennifer Gillom, fired last season as head coach of the WNBA's
and hired Tuesday as an assistant with the
It is the same staff that coached the U.S. team to the gold medal at the 2010 World Championships. Auriemma, as a coach, and Gillom, as a player, both are in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame.
Bruno, who was not available for comment prior to the announcement, is in his 26th season at DePaul.
The Blue Demons had the most wins, 29, and, in late February, reached their highest ranking ever, seventh, in the national polls. They made the
for the ninth straight year, losing in the round of 16.
The current team is 15-4 despite having lost its best player, Keisha Hampton, and two promising freshmen to injuries.
