The former Bolingbrook police sergeant is now at Menard Correctional Center, a maximum security facility that is currently on lockdown because of a recent assault on staff members.
Peterson, 59, was sentenced to 38 years in prison last week for murdering his third wife,
An Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman would not comment on the reason for his transfer today to Menard, which is located in downstate Randolph County. The facility is regarded as one of the toughest prisons in the state, but his attorneys say incarceration is difficult regardless of the location.
"Anything short of being at home stinks," defense attorney Steve Greenberg said. "I don't get a say in where he goes. If they want to send him to Menard, they'll send him to Menard. If they want to send to Disney World, that's where he'll go."
Barring a successful appeal, Peterson will not be eligible for release until he is 93.
