A woman was injured when she jumped from a burning building in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, officials said.

The blaze broke out about 11 p.m. Monday in a 2½-story home in the 5900 block of South Peoria Street. Firefighters battled heavy flames in the rear of the second floor and the attic, Deputy District Fire Chief James Mungovan said.

The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital and was "conscious and alert," a Fire Department spokesman reported.

Firefighters spent about 25 minutes extinguishing the blaze, Mungovan said.

It was not clear how many people were displaced by the fire. Fire officials said 13 people, including eight children, were displaced. The Chicago Police Department was notified of nine people displaced, News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
