Prep sports profile: Frannie Vargas

A three-year member of Lockport Township’s varsity soccer team, Frannie Vargas hopes she can help her team reach the playoffs. The senior is a skilled defender, though she hopes to score goals as well.

Head coach Todd Elkei says that Vargas is also adept at serving balls in on restarts. “She is loved by her teammates and knows how to keep the girls loose in stressful times,” Elkei says. “She is always there to help pick her teammates up when they are down.”

How long have you played soccer?

I started playing soccer in preschool.

What do you love most about soccer?

The feeling I get when I step on the field and everything else in my mind disappears.

What are your goals for this season? How will you achieve them?

To do my personal best in every game and to score a few goals before my senior year ends. To reach my goals I have to work harder individually and also work harder with my team.

What are you looking forward to most this season?

I am looking forward to playing Sandburg, Homewood Flossmoor and playing in the playoffs at the end of the year.

Do you have any rituals or superstitions when you play?

For every game I wear my hair in a braid with the same colored headband. I also spray perfume on my body starting with three sprays on my chest, one on my stomach, one spray on my left arm and then one on my right (which makes the sign of the cross).

Who has inspired you most in your athletic endeavors?

My Dad; he has inspired me, pushed me, and taught me everything I know. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be where I’m at now.

If you didn’t play soccer, what would you be doing?

Most likely playing volleyball, but I personally cannot see myself doing anything other than playing soccer.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Brad Guzan. He is a family friend who has played in the Olympics and is currently playing with Aston Villa [English Premier League] and the U.S Men’s National Team.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside soccer?

Spending time with my family and friends but I especially enjoy sleeping and eating in my free time.

Favorite quote or words to live by:

“One day at a time.”
