Those in the know are already aware that in addition to the great many cultural things for which Chicago is world-renowned, free and improvised jazz is one of the most notable. From Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians to scene stalwarts such as Ken Vandermark and Hamid Drake, this city is a nexus for people seeking the best in jazz music that plows furrows over there, outside the melody. The annual Umbrella Music Festival celebrates this sound, with a series of concerts featuring big names, big bands and killer ensembles from Chicago and elsewhere. Below is a schedule of the concerts. Any and all of them are highly recommended. All performances are at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. Visit umbrellamusic.org for more information.
