A dummy grenade found among donated items at a thrift store brought out the police bomb squad to the Belmont Gardens neighborhood this morning, police said.
An employee at the Unique Thrift store in the 4400 block of West Diversey Avenue found what looked like a grenade among a bag of donated items about 9:50 a.m., said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.
Bomb and Arson officers were called to the scene, and the Chicago Fire Department called a hazardous materials response as a precaution. Store employees were ushered from the building until it was clear.
Bomb and Arson officers determined the grenade contained no explosive material, Mirabelli said. The object appeared to be a "replica grenade" with the inside "gutted."
