Green City Market (Saturdays only), ice cream sandwiches at The Violet Hour (1520 N. Damen Ave., Chicago); Signature: Strawberry with honey nougat Nancy Silver, 36, left Chicago for five years, partly to start an ice cream shop in California. It didn't pan out. Her seminal ice cream moments — growing up in Homewood and eating at Mitchell's Soda Shop, traveling in Europe, training with pastry chef Michelle Gayer at Charlie Trotter's — speak to what she turns out: ice cream focused on the old-fashioned (like raspberry) and high-end (like rose petal). Between farmers markets, she works as a pastry chef and consultant at Big Star and The Violet Hour in Wicker Park.
