Inmate serving 40-year murder sentence dies

A man serving a 40-year sentence for murder has died in custody, authorities said today.

Robert J. Turner, 32, who was serving time at the downstate Dixon Correctional Center at 2600 Brinton Ave., suffered multiple medical problems including

cirrhosis of the liver

and a flesh-eating disorder, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

He was moved to the

University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago

’s intensive care unit on Sept. 12, and died there Friday, according to the medical examiner’s office. A time of pronouncement was not available.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday.

Turner was moved to Dixon in August of 2000, after being taken into custody of IDOC in 1998 when he was sentenced to 40 years for murder/intent to kill or injure, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Details about his criminal case were not immediately known.
