Kya Simpson-Freeman, of Chicago, was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma at the young age of four. After over a year of painful procedures, tumultuous days, and sickening chemotherapies, she passed away just after turning five on September 10, 2011. She and her mother, Debra, had a special bond that grew stronger while undergoing treatment. Kya being the only child and Debra being a single mother made those bonds tighten. Kya looks on from her hospital bed while undergoing another round of chemotherapy at Rush University Medical Center.
