At the shrine for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini outside Tehran, women walk up to the metal bars surrounding his coffin, kiss the bars and throw money inside. Khomeini called his former student, Hussein Ali Montazeri, the fruit of my life. But in July 1988, Montazeri accused Khomeini of ordering the execution of hundreds of jailed opponents. This genocide is incompatible with Islam, he wrote in a letter, later made public.
