The driver of an SUV was drunk when he slammed into a minivan on Lake Shore Drive, critically injuring the other driver, authorities said.

The crash happened about 10:45 p.m. Saturday in the 4500 block of South Lake Shore Drive in the Kenwood neighborhood, police said.

Both drivers were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The driver of the van, a 52-year-old woman, was in critical condition. The driver of the SUV, identified by police as Mareo Nutall, 32, of the 3500 block of West Arthington Street in Chicago, was stable.

There were no passengers in the SUV or the van, according to police.

According to a news release from police Monday, Nutall was driving a 2000 GMC SUV southbound on Lake Shore Drive when he ran into the rear end of the southbound 2005 Chrysler minivan.

Nutall faces charges of aggravated DUI, driving on a suspended license and  failure to reduce speed, police said.

The wreck left debris strewn across three lanes. The van and the SUV, both with major damage, pointed east on the right shoulder of the road.

Shortly before midnight, traffic was moving slowly past the scene in the far left lane.
