Were Al and Tipper Gore the inspiration for the 1970 blockbuster novel and movie "Love Story," about a preppy Harvard student and his free-spirit girlfriend? Not exactly. When Al Gore was vice president in 1997, media reports suggested it was so, and Gore seemed to confirm them. But the book's author, Erich Segal, who had met the Gores while on a sabbatical at Harvard, insisted the girlfriend was not modeled on Tipper. He allowed that some aspects of the boyfriend were based on Al, but said the main inspiration was Gore's Harvard roommate -- actor Tommy Lee Jones.
