Mothers-to-be Jayne Thompson, left, the governor's wife, and Maggie Daley, wife of Sen. Richard M. Daley join forces to promote their Well Baby Task Force in 1978. The two women outlined a program intended to save hundreds of Illinois babies each year from mental retardation and other serious handicaps. The two said they would make person appearances throughout the state on what they called "a re-education program" emphasizing proper nutrition and limited use of alcohol during pregnancy; testing of newborn babies for hypothyroidism and phenylketenuria; immunization against childhood diseases and prevention of lead poisoning.
