An empty horse trailer came loose from the SUV pulling it down the Indiana Toll Road early Saturday morning near Chesterton before striking a semitrailer truck and killing the semi's driver, police said.

The trailer, hopped a median and ended up in the eastbound lanes, police said. It was empty. The trailer struck the UPS semi, which was pulling two trailers, causing Zatina to lose control and cross into the westbound lanes before the semi came to rest in a ditch north of the toll road, according to police.
Zatina was pronounced dead at the scene by the Porter County coroner after apparently suffering blunt trauma in the crash, police said.
Police said the Wood Dale man wasn’t intoxicated and didn’t appear to make any unsafe lane movements before the accident. He was not cited or charged in connection with the crash.
The UPS semi and its trailers remained upright following the crash, police said.
