A 54-year-old Marengo man died in a motorcycle accident Thursday afternoon, according to Crystal Lake police.

John Winkelman was ejected from a motorcycle that collided with a Chrysler Concorde about 3 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Route 176 and Mt. Thabor Road, according to a release from the department. The Northwest Herald said Winkelman is a captain with the Huntley Fire Protection District.

Winkelman wasn't wearing a helmet and was taken to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock.

The driver of the car, who suffered minor injuries, was taken to the same hospital.

The car came to a stop on southbound Mt. Thabor Road and entered the intersection to make a left turn onto eastbound 176 when the motorcycle, traveling west, crashed into the car.

Police and the McHenry County Coroner's office are investigating the accident. Police didn't say whether the driver was cited or will face charges in connection with the crash.
