At 12:18 p.m. members of the McHenry County Sheriff's Office Patrol Division went to the 2900 block of Northwest Road in unincorporated Marengo Township to serve a domestic battery warrant on Edward P. Bolen, according to a release from Sheriff Keith Nygren's office.
When police entered the home, Bolen pointed a handgun at them and the deputies fired gunshots but did not strike him, the release said. He then barricaded himself in a basement room.
The McHenry County SWAT team responded and when they entered the basement room Bolen brandished a knife at the officers before he was incapacitated by two beanbag rounds, police said.

Further investigation of the officer-involved shooting was being handled by the Illinois State Police.
According to McHenry County authorities Bolen has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, both felonies, along with misdemeanor counts of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a Firearm Owner's Identification Card.
