Metra train hits vehicle in Blue Island

A Metra train ending its run from downtown Chicago struck a vehicle at a crossing in Blue Island this afternoon, an agency spokesman said.

Rock Island District train 603 left downtown at 2:25 p.m., was scheduled to arrive at the Blue Island Metra Vermont Street station at 3:10 p.m., and hit the vehicle as it ended its run, said Michael Gillis, a Metra spokesman.

The train was not traveling at high speed when it hit the vehicle, he said.

Blue Island Fire Department crews were dispatched to the wreck, but details on injuries weren't immediately known, according to the fire department.

The train is scheduled to return to Chicago later this afternoon, and likely will not be delayed, Gillis said.
