WASHINGTON—First lady Michelle Obama arrived Thursday morning in Chicago for a memorial service for James Bowman, the father of Valerie Jarrett, a top aide to President Barack Obama.

Bowman, an expert in inherited blood diseases and population genetics, was the first tenured African-American professor in the University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division. He died of renal cancer Sept. 28.

The first lady’s office, which announced Mrs. Obama’s trip after she landed in Chicago, said she will return to the nation’s capital after the service.

Mrs. Obama was last in her native Chicago only Monday for the funeral of Maggie Daley, the city’s former first lady.

The memorial service began at 10 a.m. at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on the University of Chicago campus, the university said in a statement.

A reception was to follow at Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St.

Later Thursday, “A Night of Remembrance for Dr. Bowman” is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, the university said.
