Two pioneers of gospel music, Mahalia Jackson and the Rev. Thomas Dorsey, sing at the Pilgrim Baptist Church, Jan 6, 1955. Dorsey gave up a career as a popular blues pianist to devote his life to gospel music and Jackson was part of the first wave of musicians he mentored. He wrote her signature song, "Take My Hand, Precious Lord". Her career included multiple Grammy Awards, singing at the 1963 March on Washington, where Martin Luther King gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech and later singing at King's funeral after he was assassinated.
