Louis Armstrong at the Ravinia Festival with vocalist Velma Middleton in 1956. Armstrong, whose trumpet and singing made him one of America's most beloved performers in the 20th century, honed his gifts in Chicago in the 1920s, first as a side man for King Oliver, then with his own Hot Five and Hot Seven groups.
