Naperville’s Chris Derrick won his first national title Saturday, taking the U.S. Cross-Country championships in St. Louis.
Derrick, who was graduated from Stanford in June, covered the 12-kilometer course in 35 minutes, 38.6 seconds to beat three-time champion Dathan Ritzenhein by 5.5 seconds.
The top six earned spots on the U.S. team for the World Championships March 24 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Derrick, 22, missed the 2012 Olympic team by one place when he finished fourth in the 10,000 meters at the U.S. trials. He had the second fastest time by a U.S. runner for that distance last year and finished third in the race at the 2012 NCAA Championships.
