A man suspected in a string of salon robberies is believed to have held up a Near North Side salon this morning, police said.
The man went into a salon in the 1200 block of North Clybourn Avenue about 10:10 a.m. and robbed the business, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien.
Detectives believe the robber may be the same one who robbed two other North Side salons in December, O’Brien said. Those robberies took place in the 1300 block of West Fullerton Avenue about 5:40 p.m. on Dec. 29, and the next day in the 1200 block of West Fullerton Avenue, about 5 p.m.
Other police agencies have warned the man suspected in those robberies also may be responsible for robberies in recent weeks in Niles, Skokie, Morton Grove, Bensenville, Lombard, and Glen Ellyn.
In today’s robbery, the man entered the salon, walked up to the counter and took a small black handgun out his backpack, O’Brien said, citing preliminary information.
“Put the money in the bag,” the robber told the clerk at the counter, and she took cash from the salon’s register and put it in the bag, O’Brien said. The man then left the store and headed west from the salon, he said.
The robber was described as white, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was weearing a red ski cap, black sunglasses, a red puffy coat with a hood, and a red-and-yellow scarf covering part of his face. He was carrying a small black backpack. The description is similar to that given for several of the recent suburban robberies.
Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call Area Central detectives as 312-747-8380.
