Shortly before 4 p.m., rescuers were alerted to head to the lake near the 5000 block of South Lake Shore Drive, but when they arrived there was no boat in distress, according to Fire Media information.
When the Police Marine Unit arrived on scene, officers learned people who had been riding a jet ski had gone into the water, but a boater had been able to pick them up and the skiers were able to board the jet ski again and move on, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
The call regarding the jet skiers was just one of many rescuers responded to along Lake Michigan in Chicago and Illinois suburbs today.
In two separate incidents downtown this afternoon, one person went into the water at Monroe Harbor to cool off and another jumped into the lake to grab his wallet, but both were out of the water before rescuers reached the area, police said. At 98th Street at Calumet Park, someone jumped into the water near the Calumet Coast Guard Station, but was back on land by the time rescuers got there.
