A funeral and a separate memorial service have been set for a Schaumburg High School senior who was found dead over the weekend in an apparent hit-and-run.
Mikias Tibebu, 18, was found with critical head and neck injuries after midnight Saturday near Schaumburg Road and Branchwood Drive and was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
Family members said Tibebu was born in Ethiopia and came to the U.S. as a toddler. School officials said he was a standout athlete and student, running track and cross country and earning Illinois State Scholar and National Achievement award honors.
A funeral for Tibebu has been set for noon Wednesday at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N. Western Ave., Chicago, with burial to follow at Montrose Cemetery, 5400 N. Pulaski Road. Students who plan to attend are asked to call the school attendance office.
On Thursday, Schaumburg High will host a memorial service for Tibebu at 7 p.m. at the school’s main gym at 1100 W. Schaumburg Road.
Schaumburg police put out a call Saturday asking anyone who might have witnessed the apparent accident or was driving in the area between 12:15 and 12:45 a.m. Any potential witnesses are asked to call 847-882-3534. No developments in the investigation were announced Monday.
