This picture of two men using a slot machine to gamble in a tavern on July 25, 1942 brought threats against Chester Nichols, Chicago Tribune photographer-reporter. Nichols took the picture in Uncle Tom's tavern on Waukegan Road near Northbrook, Ill. Anthony Fragassi of Evanston, who made the threats, was seized by police. The episode gave impetus to State's Attorney Courtney's investigation into syndicate gambling.
