On June 3, 2003, in a game against the Devil Rays, Sammy Sosa was ejected in the first inning after umpires found cork in his shattered bat. Sosa told reporters that it was an honest mistake. "I use that bat for batting practice," he said. "It's something that I take the blame for. It's a mistake, I know that. I feel sorry. The bat symbolized the downfall of Sammy Sosa, Grant DePorter, president of Harry Carays Restaurant Group, said. It was Sosas jump the shark moment.'" The restaurant group bought the bat in 2010 for $16,567 from Sosa's former teammate Mike Remlinger and put it on display at their Navy Pier location. Sosa said through a spokesman that he was shocked Remlinger would sell the bat.
