A man wanted in connection with a slaying in Dolton waived extradition this morning after being arrested following a traffic stop in Iowa, police say.
The suspect, Albert Allen. was driving a van stopped by Cedar Rapids police Tuesday afternoon, according to police spokeswoman Sgt. Cristy Hamblin. The officers recognized Allen or his passenger, both of whom had warrant for their arrest, she said. The passenger had a several Iowa City warrants, she said.
Allen was extradited to Illinois today, a Dolton spokeswoman said.
Allen, 26, has a criminal record in Linn County, including a 2010 drug conviction, Hamblin said.
Allen is a suspect in the slaying of Eric Denman, 35, of East Chicago, Indiana, who was found shot to death in the 400 block of Jefferson Street, in Dolton, on Sunday, authorities said.
Dolton police were called to Jefferson Street about 9:50 p.m. on Sunday, after someone apparently pulled up in a car and opened fire on Denman on the street, Dolton spokeswoman TaQuoya Kennedy said. When police arrived, witnesses led them to Denman, who was found wounded on the street, Kennedy said.
Denman was declared dead at 11:39 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. His death was ruled a homicide on Monday.
An inter-agency alert entered in Allen's Iowa court file indicates he is wanted by Dolton police in connection with a slaying that took place on Sunday, according to the Linn County, Iowa, attorney's office. Allen signed a waiver allowing him to be extradited to Illinois following the court hearing, and was waiting today to be sent back to Illinois with Dolton police, according to the attorney's office.
Although there were some reports that Allen was charged in a warrant, the Cook County state's attorney's office and Iowa officials did not immediately have any information about a warrant naming him as a suspect.
Denman's family said that witnesses had pointed to Allen as the person who shot Denman, but police were not releasing any information in the case.
In a slaying earlier the same day in Dolton, Brian Neal, 29, of the 6700 block of South Langley Avenue, was shot in the chest Sunday in the 14600 block of South Memorial Drive in Dolton, and declared dead at 7:58 p.m. at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Prior versions of this story misspelled Denman's name as Denim, which was the spelling the Cook County medical examiner's office gave at the time of his death. Family and court records corrected the spelling.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
