The Chicago Fire Department pulled two people from the Chicago River near the north end of Goose Island early Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

The two were rescued near the 1200 block of West North Avenue, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

Police said three men who lived in the area were drinking near the river when one man slipped and fell in. A second man reached for his friend and also fell in, police said.

The third ran to a nearby gas station and called 911 at about 1 a.m., sending emergency responders to the scene.

The two were both transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Sean Flynn, a spokesman for department.

One was transported in serious-to-critical condition and the other in fair-to-serious condition, he said.
