Having received his diploma, a Roosevelt University graduate stops on the stage for a brief word with featured speaker Mayor Harold Washington during commencement exercises at the Auditorium Theater. Washington, a member of the class of 1949, told the 550 graduates that "by the year 2000, Chicago will be populated by approximately equal numbers of blacks, whites, and Hispanics and an equal number of Asians."
