Call on Carmindy
From TLC's show "What Not To Wear," celebrity makeup artist Carmindy will visit Chicago on behalf of her new makeup collection called "Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy." Carmindy will help shoppers choose makeup to emphasize their own natural beauty, and coupons and samples will be given out as follows:
- From 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at CVS, 711 N. Ogden Ave.
- From 4. to 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at Ulta, 456 E. Rand Rd., Arlington Heights.
- From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at CVS, 741 W. 31st St., Chicago.

Right on time for back-to-school shopping, Frankie's on the Park opens in Lincoln Park on Aug. 14. The target is boys and girls ages 8 to 18, with the lure of about 80 brands such as Little Marc Jacobs, the European line Essentiel and Cheap Mondays. Along with gaming stations there will be a second-floor graffiti bar, where teens can customize their shirts. "We think a lot of the moms will shop here too because we've picked things that are fashion-forward but not inappropriate," said owner Lisa Rolfe Burik. The store spans a price range from $75 to $700 (for made-to-order dresses). Boys' suiting is covered too, thanks to Hickey Freeman, Ike Behar and more. Those who mention the Chicago Tribune before Halloween will get 10 percent off a purchase. Watch for the grand opening party Sept. 5 and an in-store event Sept. 20 to help support Children's Memorial Hospital. The owner wants to encourage philanthropy among the young. Mario sees model material in 5 local women
The "Mario, Make Me A Model" contest, orchestrated by Chicago salon magnate Mario Tricoci, drew tears of elation and let-down Tuesday when five finalists were plucked from a group of 21 semifinalists, starting from an original pool of 400 hopefuls. "This means everything. I have wanted to be a model my whole life," said Ursula Alice Dabrowska of Vernon Hills, breaking down with joy after she was selected.
The five Chicago-area women have earned a model makeover from Mario Tricoci Hair Salons, runway instruction by Ford Models, personal training with Equinox Fitness Clubs and a spot in a fashion advertorial spread photographed by Matt Ferguson for Chicago magazine, owned by the Tribune Co. They also will be considered for a contract with Ford Models and a Tricoci trend photo shoot. "It's about appearance, attitude and smile--real or phony? These were real and they were themselves," said Tricoci, who judged the contest with other Chicago fashion and beauty representatives.
The five will walk the runway in the "Dress Code" fashion show Oct. 3, featuring designs from students at the city's top fashion schools, during Fashion Focus Chicago. (See chicagofashionresource.com.) One aspiring model will be chosen that night to receive a five-night trip for two to Mexico, among other prizes.
