Party: Whig Term: March 5, 1849 - July 9, 1850 (died in office) Vice president: Millard Fillmore Highlights of presidency: Though a slave owner himself, Taylor opposed the extension of slavery and many aspects of what would become known as the Compromise of 1850 favorable to the South. Did you know? Taylor had never held a political office before becoming president. His nickname was "Old Rough and Ready," but he rode sidesaddle into every battle.
