Two people, including a child, were killed and three others seriously injured this morning in a head-on collision in west suburban Lyons, authorities said.
The two-vehicle crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of 1st Avenue and West 47th Street, Lyons police said in a news release.
Damien Calzada, 7, of the 7900 block of South Kirkland, and Harrington Jameson, 43, of the 1700 block of Brookfield Road in Naperville, were pronounced dead at Loyola Hospital a short time after the accident, according to a Cook County medical examiner's spokesman.
Officers were responding to a call of a motorist driving the wrong way up a one-way street when they received reports of the crash, Lyons police said
When officers arrived at the crash scene, they found two vehicles involved in what appeared to be a head-on collision, along with two people who were ejected from one of the vehicles, police said.
The remaining victims had to be extricated by fire crews. All five people were taken to area hospitals in serious-to-critical condition, police said. Police didn't say which hospitals.
Police shut down traffic on 1st Avenue so that investigators could reconstruct the crash. Officials said they expected the roadway to be closed for several hours.
Authorities didn't say whether they believed drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
