A 20-year-old man died this morning after he was shot by a friend whose gun he had been handling in the friend's West Side home Thursday night, police said.
James Williams, of the 5400 block of South Carpenter Street, was declared dead about 2 a.m. at Stroger Hospital, five hours after he was shot in the abdomen, authorities said.
Williams was in a bedroom at an acquaintance's home in the 4100 block of West Potomac Avenue about 7 p.m. Thursday when the incident happened. The acquaintance showed Williams his gun, according to a police report. Williams handled the gun for a minute, then gave it back to his acquaintance, who told police he was going to unload the gun, but that it then fired and shot Williams, according to police.
Grand Central Area detectives were investigating Williams' death as possibly being accidental, but the Cook County medical examiner's office determined following an autopsy that Williams had died from a gunshot wound to the abdomen in a homicide.
