Trains on the Milwaukee West Metra line may still be running 5 to 10 minutes late throughout the day Saturday due to a freight train that derailed Friday morning in Franklin Park, an agency spokeswoman said.
“There was significant damage to the tracks,” said Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile Friday evening. “People should expect delays tomorrow.”
The Canadian National Railway Co. freight train derailed at about 11 a.m. Friday. Although only one car is believed to have been involved, it destroyed about a mile of track as it was failing, Reile said.
North Central Service trains also were delayed throughout Friday evening.
During Friday’s delays on the West Line, passengers traveling outbound getting on or off at the Galewood, Mars, Mont Clare, and Elmwood Park stations have had to board or get off at the pedestrian crossing at each station, Reile said. Conductors will be able to tell passengers which cars will be opening doors at these stations.
Reile could not say Friday night if those boarding changes also would be in effect on Saturday.
